How every build works

Seven steps, the same every time.

The book, the academy and the school programme all follow these steps, so builders always know what comes next.

  1. ArrivalSee what you will build today.
  2. DiscoverUnderstand the problem it solves.
  3. DesignPlan the circuit before touching a wire.
  4. DevelopBuild it with your own hands.
  5. DebugFind what is wrong and fix it.
  6. DemoShow it working.
  7. DocumentRecord it in your Passport online.

In MAKEON’s own mapping, the seven steps cover all eight NGSS science and engineering practices, and Design, Develop and Debug are the engineering design cycle.

Builder’s Bench

Every kit comes with a place online to keep building.

  • Enter the kit number on the box to unlock your builds.
  • Follow each build step by step, with videos.
  • Stuck? The AI mentor asks a question that helps. It never gives the answer.
  • Every finished build goes into your Passport. Parents can see it too.
What builders take away

Eight builder competencies.

Every build is marked with the competencies it grows. Each is scored from 1 to 5 as the builder shows it in their builds. The Passport records them, so progress is something a child can show, not just say.

CompetencyWhat it meansWhere it starts

Challenge

Send the light into the star.

Use at least one mirror or one piece of glass. Finish it to earn the Light Bender medal for your Passport.

Build it for real

The Night-Light

A light sensor notices when the room goes dark and switches an LED on. Build 01 in the Spark kit.

Next Monday: Launch your rocket. Set the fuel, the load and the angle, and see if it reaches space.

What you learnt
  • Light travels in straight lines until it meets something.
  • A mirror reflects light: the angle in equals the angle out, both measured from the normal.
  • Glass slows light down, so the ray bends as it goes in and out. This is refraction.
  • If light meets the inside of the glass at a low, glancing angle (more than about 42° from the normal), it cannot get out and reflects back.
  • A prism bends each colour by a different amount, so white light splits into a rainbow.
Key wordsreflectionrefractionnormaldispersion

Where you see it: spectacles and phone cameras use lenses; optical fibres carry the internet as trapped light; a rainbow is sunlight split by raindrops.

Quick check

1. A ray hits a mirror at 30° from the normal. At what angle does it leave?

2. Why does light bend when it goes into glass?

For curious parents and students

What is physical AI?

AI that moves things in the real world: robots, drones, self-driving cars. They all run the same simple loop. They become AI when they learn from examples.

1 · Sense

A sensor notices

Light, heat, distance, a tilt, a touch.

2 · Decide

A board decides

Usually by a rule in its program. In AI, by a pattern it learned from examples.

3 · Act

Something happens

A light, a sound, a motor turning.

Try it

Pick a machine. See its three parts.

Night-light

Spark
Sense

A light sensor notices it has gone dark.

Decide

The program's rule: if it is dark, turn the light on. You set how dark with a knob.

Act

The LED comes on.

Not AI. It follows its rule exactly. Every machine starts with this loop.

Quick quiz

Rule or learned?

A machine that follows a rule someone wrote is not AI. A machine that learned the rule from examples is.

A street light that switches on at 6 pm every day

A phone that unlocks when it recognises your face

A washing machine that stops when the timer ends

An email app that catches more spam each time you mark one

How MAKEON teaches it

What each level adds.

LevelAddsWhat builders do
SparkSenseTurn sensors for light, heat and a magnet into switches.
ForceMoveLet a small sensor switch a big motor, so machines move on their own.
LogicCodeWrite the program a robot runs.
SystemChooseWeigh four senses at once and decide which one wins.
InventLearnTrain a machine to learn a rule from examples.
Parents ask

Common questions

Is my child too young for AI?

No. Every AI machine uses the same loop of sensing, deciding and acting, and builders learn that loop in their first builds. By Invent, they teach a machine from examples.

Will they build robots and drones?

Robots from Logic, Level 3, when coding starts. Drones and robotic arms are built at the MAKEON Academy, with a mentor. Flying needs safety rules, so builders learn balance and control on the ground first.

Do they just use AI apps?

No. They build the machines that AI runs on. The MAKEON AI mentor gives hints and asks questions. It never gives the answer, so the thinking stays theirs.

About MAKEON

Every child grows up a builder.

We want building things to be a normal part of growing up, for every child, at home and at school.

Our mission

Real parts, a book for every stage, a mentor, and a place to keep building.

In schools, in our academy and at home, so children learn by building, understand what they built, and engineer what comes next.

What we believe
  • Real parts make real builders. Proper boards and sensors, not toys that only work one way.
  • Nothing demonstrated. Everything built. Children do every build with their own hands.
  • Guide the hands. Never replace them. Mentors, and the AI mentor, ask questions. They never fix it for you.
  • Builders keep building. One record from the first build to the last level, and beyond.

Two ways to run it.

The builds, books and Builder’s Bench are the same in both. What changes is the room.

A

School Lab

A permanent build lab in your school, taught by MAKEON mentors.

  • MAKEON sets up the lab and sends mentors
  • You provide a room and periods
  • Best for schools that want building at the centre

Six kits of one level in a stackable case. Mentor materials and spares sit in the lid.

Classroom set

10 kits

Two classroom cases: ten kits, plus a box of mentor materials and a box of spares in the last two slots.

Builder’s Bench

Teacher view

Every case and set comes with a teacher view online: class lists, each student's builds and where they are stuck.

Opex models are available for both. Leave your number and we will call you back.

Pricing depends on your school size and model. We share it in a meeting.

Curriculum

65 builds on one learning pathway.

Five levels, each with its own kit and book. You choose which levels to run and for which groups of students.

Mapped to the syllabus

Every build is mapped to the science chapters it belongs to in CBSE, ICSE and state board syllabi, and to the NGSS practices used internationally. Often the hands come before the theory, on purpose.

Eight competencies

Wiring, Debugging, Systems, Programming, Design, Documentation, Collaboration and Innovation, each scored 1 to 5 and recorded in every student's Passport.

A certificate per level

Each level ends with a certificate the Passport can prove: core builds done, the flagship passed as a crew, a capstone shown to a real user.

International framework

All eight NGSS science and engineering practices, in every build.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) set out eight practices that scientists and engineers use. The seven steps of every MAKEON build cover all eight. Design, Develop and Debug together are the engineering design cycle in the NGSS engineering design standards (ETS1).

  1. 1Asking questions and defining problems
  2. 2Developing and using models
  3. 3Planning and carrying out investigations
  4. 4Analysing and interpreting data
  5. 5Using mathematics and computational thinking
  6. 6Constructing explanations and designing solutions
  7. 7Engaging in argument from evidence
  8. 8Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information

This mapping is MAKEON’s own. The NGSS organisations have not reviewed or endorsed MAKEON.

The engineering design cycle

What happens across a school year
  1. Set-up, first monthKits arrive, teachers or mentors are trained, classes are created online.
  2. Term 1A build period every week, every student hands-on.
  3. Mid-yearParent demo day: students show what they built.
  4. Term 2Each student invents a gadget for a real problem.
  5. Expo seasonYour School Expo. The best builds go on to the City Expo.
  6. Year endA progress report for every student.
For academy partners

Run a MAKEON Academy in your town.

Partner centres run after-school sessions and holiday cohorts with MAKEON kits, books and Builder’s Bench, to the same standard as our own academy in Chennai.

MAKEON provides

  • The curriculum, kits and Builder Books
  • Mentor training: up to two weeks, then supervised hours until certified
  • Builder’s Bench for every builder and parent
  • Quality visits, marketing material and a place on the BUILT Expo map

You provide

  • A safe, well-lit room for up to 32 builders
  • Local mentors, trained by MAKEON
  • Enrolments in your town

Partnership terms are shared in a meeting.

BUILT Expo

Host a School Expo.

  • Your students present to parents and judges.
  • Your school is named beside every builder who goes on to the City Expo and State Finals.
  • MAKEON provides the format, judging sheets and certificates.

New to MAKEON? Ask about the Expo Starter: one term of Spark builds with two groups of students, ending in your first School Expo.

For Rotary clubs, CSR teams and donors

Sponsor a classroom.

Fund a classroom case for a government school: six kits, the books, teacher training and Builder’s Bench for every student. You receive a report on the class's progress through the year.

Our classes at Bentinck Girls’ School run in association with Rotary. Companies and Rotary clubs can also sponsor a City Expo.

We will call you back. For schools, we bring a classroom case to the demo.

For anyone who loves solving problems. Any age.

Some children watch the future. Others build it.

Real parts, a Builder Book, and an AI mentor on Builder’s Bench that asks the right question instead of giving the answer. From a first circuit to robots and connected products.

Builder’s Bench · included with every kit

Your AI mentor never builds it for you. It helps you think.

Builder’s Bench is where every kit comes alive online. Unlock your builds with the kit number on the box and keep building at your own pace.

  • AI mentor, any time. Stuck at 9 pm? It asks a question that points you to the answer. It never hands you the answer.
  • Every build, step by step. Videos, wiring pictures and the code, matched to your Builder Book.
  • Live classes every week. Build along with a MAKEON mentor, or watch the recording on the same page.
  • Your Passport. Every build, every bug you fixed and every medal, in one record parents can see.

65 builds to make

Now in classrooms at Bentinck Girls’ School, Chennai: all five levels, in English and Tamil, with Rotary.

From your textbook to your hands

You learnt the rule in class. Now make it work.

Every build stands on something from science or maths. Move over a cardTap a card to see the build that makes it real.

Every build in the Builder Books is mapped to the science chapter it comes from, whichever board you follow, and to the NGSS science and engineering practices.

What MAKEON is

Everything a young builder needs, in one place.

Builders learn electronics, coding and robotics by making things that solve real problems at home.

The Spark kit opened, with the Builder Book, control board and parts

The kit

Every part for every build, in one box. Nothing extra to buy.

The Builder Book

Twelve or more builds per level, step by step, each one solving a real problem.

Builder’s Bench, online

Track every build, get hints from the AI mentor and collect a Passport of everything you made.

The learning pathway

Five levels, from first circuit to finished product.

Each level builds on the one before. New to electronics? Start at Spark, whatever your age.

Where it leads

From a night-light to robots and drones.

Every machine has the same three parts: something that senses, something that decides and something that acts. Children learn all three, one level at a time.

System

Rover

Sees a wall, picks a new path, drives on.

Academy

Robotic arm

Knows where each joint is and moves it exactly.

Academy

Drone

Feels every tilt and corrects it hundreds of times a second.

Three ways to learn

At home, with a mentor, or at your school.

BUILT Expo and challenges

Build something good, and people will see it.

Weekly challenges online. From January 2028, the best builders present at their School Expo and then the City Expo.
